To improve your health [optimally] you should exercise at least 5 times per week for 30 minutes at above 60% of your maximum heart rate.
To improve your personal fitness [optimally] you should exercise at least 3 times per week for at least 30 minutes at above 70% of your maximum heart rate. Although it is more complicated if activity specificity and performance delivery time is considered.
In conclusion; it all comes back to using your body as nature intended! Use your body properly; including eating a balanced diet and resting adequately, and you will experience the satisfaction of good health and fitness alongside the attainment of your personal goals.
